Chapter 1: the goodbye i never say

The sun shone brightly over the terrace of the large Italian hotel, and the summer air was full of life. Amen and Olivia stood at the edge of the pool, laughing and enjoying the moment.

– “Finally, we’re here!” Olivia exclaimed, waving her arms excitedly.

– “Wow… this place is amazing!” Amen replied, her eyes scanning the huge pool and colorful slides.

– “Look at this pool… and the slides! Imagine how much fun we’re going to have!” Olivia teased her friend lightly.

Amen blushed and laughed softly:

– “Honestly… I don’t mind jumping in now… but the sun is so hot!”

– “Don’t worry!” Olivia smiled, shielding her friend from some of the sunlight.

The girls plunged into the cool water, the refreshing feeling washing away the heat. Moments of laughter and joy filled the air, free from any other thoughts.

After a few minutes of playing, Amen noticed a young man standing by one of the slides. His hair glistened under the sun, and his eyes sparkled with boldness and mischief.

– “Olivia… look… he’s so handsome!” Amen whispered, unable to take her eyes off him.

Olivia smiled and winked:

– “Careful… I think your heart just skipped a beat!”

Amen’s cheeks turned red, and she laughed shyly:

– “Let’s go try it ourselves!”

The girls ran toward the slide, laughter echoing through the air as water splashed around them. Summer excitement filled their hearts.

Alex noticed them and smiled, calling out cheerfully:

– “Do you want to join us? We need one or two people to make two teams.”

Amen’s heart skipped a beat. She glanced at Olivia, who winked encouragingly.

– “Okay… I’ll be on your team,” Alex said, his eyes shining.

– “O… okay!” Amen replied shyly, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement.

Olivia joined the other team, laughing:

– “Good luck! Don’t get too distracted!”

Amen took a deep breath, realizing summer had officially begun, and this trip would be filled with laughter, fun, and maybe, an unexpected spark.

The teams lined up at the pool edge, the sun glinting on their faces and the water shimmering under its rays. Amen felt a little nervous but excited at the same time.

– “Ready for the challenge?” Alex asked with a light smile, pointing toward the water slide race.

Amen smiled shyly and nodded:

– “Yes… I’ll try not to lose!”

Alex laughed and lightly tapped her shoulder, making her heart beat even faster.

Across the pool, Olivia cheered for her team, and Amen watched, giggling:

– “She’s so serious!” she said softly.

The race began. Teams slid down one slide after another. Amen felt free and exhilarated with every glide, noticing how close Alex was, his laughter filling the air, his eyes following every movement of hers.

– “Wow! You’re really good!” Alex shouted as their eyes met mid-slide.

– “Oh… thanks!” Amen replied, blushing, trying to control her nerves and laughter at the same time.

As the race continued, Amen couldn’t help but watch him every time he came close. Each smile, each glance sent a warm feeling through her chest, a sensation she didn’t fully understand yet.

The race ended with smiles and laughter. Both teams gathered at the pool edge, soaked and happy, sensing that these small moments could be the start of an unforgettable summer.

Alex looked at Amen and smiled:

– “You were amazing… we should do this again tomorrow!”

Amen laughed shyly, smiling at him. She knew this was just a spark, and the summer ahead would be full of surprises, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

After a few minutes of resting, Alex and Amen sat near the pool, watching the other teams continue to play.

Alex said lightly:

– “Is this your first time in Italy?”

– “Yes… I’ve never been here before. Everything is wonderful!” Amen replied with a smile, observing the kids and teens racing down the slides.

They talked a little, and Amen discovered Alex loved the sea and waves, and that he had a passion for water sports.

– “Actually… I’ll be in a wave-racing contest later. I think it’s going to be fun.” Alex said with a smile.

– “Do you want me to watch?” she asked gently, intrigued.

– “If you’d like… it’ll be great to see me try to conquer the waves!”

Amen agreed with a smile, her curiosity and excitement growing.

As the activity ended, everyone returned to their rooms to rest and prepare for lunch.

During lunch, Alex stepped out of the restaurant, and Amen walked in through the same door at the same time. It happened like déjà vu, as if fate had repeated the moment.

Both smiled lightly, their faces tinged with the funny coincidence.

– “Seems like the path is favoring us today!” Alex said with a soft laugh.

– “Or maybe we just keep crossing it by mistake!” Amen replied, smiling as the wind played with her hair.

Those brief moments were full of playful tension, hinting at the chemistry building between them, leaving the air open for more encounters and adventures throughout the trip.

---

The next day was filled with excitement and tension. It was the day of the water contest, and Amen and Olivia stood at the edge of the big pool, carefully watching the competitors, uncertain about the rules.

– “I don’t really know much about this contest… will we understand it all?” Amen asked, trying to follow every move.

– “Maybe… but we should just focus on the players,” Olivia replied, her eyes scanning the action.

Among the crowd, one of the participants explained some rules to the others, but his voice mixed with the splashes and laughter.

Amen felt a flutter in her stomach and whispered to Olivia shyly:

– “I get an ache in my stomach each time I see him.”

Olivia smiled softly, understanding:

– “I think I know what you mean… it’s normal.”

At that moment, Alex noticed Amen watching him. He smiled at her and said quietly, as if speaking straight from his heart:

– “I love the feeling I got when I see you.”

Amen blushed and looked away for a moment, unsure how to respond.

Olivia caught the moment and whispered lightly:

– “Wow… seems like there’s something between you two… maybe I should leave you alone for a bit!”

Just then, Alex’s friend called him from afar:

– “Alex! Get ready!”

Alex smiled at Amen:

– “Wish me luck.”

Amen replied shyly:

– “Good luck, Alex. Fighting!”

As the competitors moved to focus on the challenge, Amen looked at Olivia:

– “Did you hear what he said?”

Olivia nodded and shook her head lightly:

– “Yes… seems things are getting more interesting.”

Amen watched the contest with worry, afraid for Alex, and shocked at the size of the waves he would face. Her heart pounded, mixed with admiration and anxiety, knowing this day would be more challenging than she had imagined.

---

Later, Amen and Olivia stood on the hotel balcony after a long day in the city. Amen glanced at her phone:

– “Oh… where’s my phone? I need to take some pictures,” she said lightly, though nervousness showed on her face.

Olivia smiled teasingly:

– “Did you get his number or Instagram?”

Amen sighed, shy:

– “No… I want to, but I’m too nervous… it feels impossible right now.”

– “Ah… you’ll regret it!” Olivia said, lightly touching her shoulder.

Amen realized how quickly time was passing—they were leaving in just two days. Her face turned sad as she whispered softly:

– “I hope him and I end up happy together.”

A little later, the trip organizer called Olivia, asking where they were so they could head to the next activity.

– “Oh… we completely forgot!” Olivia said, laughing nervously, asking for a few more minutes.

Amen looked at her anxiously:

– “What about Alex?”

– “No problem… at least we saw him at the hotel. That’s enough for now.”

They got ready and headed out. Meanwhile, Alex searched for Amen among the crowd, believing she hadn’t noticed him. Feeling the weight of the waves and the day, his mood shifted slightly, then he noticed his friend:

– “Is something wrong?”

– “No… nothing.”

Alex thought to himself:

– “I thought she’d see me… I was going to tell her… this is the last day I’ll see her… looks like what I’m waiting for isn’t going to happen.”

After enjoying the city, Amen felt a strange sensation in her chest, glancing at the time and wondering when they would return to the hotel. A faint smile appeared as she thought about Alex.

– “Stop thinking about him!” Olivia said, smiling softly, trying to calm her.

But in that moment, Amen realized the truth: she had fallen in love. Shocked, she didn’t know how to handle the feeling.

Upon returning to the hotel, Amen saw Alex carrying his luggage to leave. Their eyes met. Amen’s heart raced so fast, she couldn’t speak.

Alex just looked at her, thinking inside:

– “I’m gonna miss what we never have.”

As he walked past, he silently wished: “Please… talk to me, I’ll stay.” Their shoulders brushed briefly, loaded with unspoken meaning—all under Olivia’s watchful eye.

Alex got into the car. Amen watched him leave, exchanging glances that said more than words.

Olivia looked at her with concern:

– “Are you okay?”

Amen didn’t answer, running to her room. She closed the bathroom door and cried, her eyes red, remembering every moment and glance, shouting aloud:

– “All this… he never considered me… he just saw me as a friend!”

Olivia sighed gently from outside:

– “Friends don’t look at each other that way… open the door, I’ll hug you.”

Amen opened the door and was embraced by Olivia:

– “You’ll forget him… and if you were meant to be together, you’d meet again. There are plenty of men in this world. This isn’t the end

. You’ll find your right person.”

Amen felt a bit of relief, but her heart remained heavy with longing, knowing this summer would be full of complex emotions and unforgettable moments.
