Haruki returned two days later, loyalty card tucked carefully in his wallet like a secret talisman. The rain had given way to a soft spring drizzle, and Café Whimsy glowed like a lantern against the gray afternoon. He pushed the door open, the familiar chime settling his nerves even as his heart kicked against his ribs.

Ayaka looked up from wiping down the counter. Her ponytail was a little looser today, a few strands framing her face. The smile that spread across her lips was warmer than the espresso machine.

“Look who’s back already,” she said. “That’s two stamps. You’re making impressive progress toward that reward.”

Haruki’s ears burned. “I… had a free period. And I promised Miyu.”

As if summoned, Miyu barreled out from behind the pastry case, arms outstretched. “Onii-chan!” She launched herself at his legs. Chocolate frosting smeared across one cheek, and her small hands left sticky prints on his jeans.

He crouched without thinking, lifting her up. “Miyu-chan. You’re a walking dessert.”

She giggled and smeared more frosting on his collar. Ayaka watched them, something soft and unreadable in her eyes.

“She’s been asking about you since you left,” Ayaka said, voice quieter. “Kept looking at the door every time the bell rang.”

Haruki set Miyu down carefully. “I can… help with the toys again if any broke.”

Ayaka’s smile tilted. “Actually, I could use a different kind of help. The delivery guy dropped the milk crates by the back door and ran. They’re heavy.”

He followed her through the narrow hallway into the small storage area behind the café. The space smelled of coffee beans and laundry detergent, the same scent that had clung to the apron she’d given him. Two large crates of milk sat just inside the door. Haruki lifted the first one with only a small grunt. Ayaka took the second, and for a moment their shoulders brushed in the tight space.

    She didn’t step away.

“You’re stronger than you look,” she murmured.

He almost dropped the crate. “Engineering students lift a lot of textbooks.”

Her laugh was low. They stacked the milk in the walk-in fridge. When they emerged, Miyu was waiting with a half-eaten cookie and an expectant expression.

The rest of the afternoon passed in a comfortable rhythm. Haruki wiped tables while Ayaka handled the occasional customer. Miyu colored at the corner table, occasionally demanding that “Onii-chan” admire her latest masterpiece. Every time Ayaka passed him, she found a reason to touch his arm or shoulder light, casual, but each contact left heat under his skin.

Near closing, the last customer left. Ayaka flipped the sign and turned to him.

“Stay for a bit? I made extra cinnamon rolls this morning. They won’t keep.”

They sat at the counter with warm rolls and two cups of coffee. Miyu dozed in the armchair, cookie crumbs on her shirt. The café felt smaller somehow, intimate.

“Why engineering?” Ayaka asked, chin resting on her hand.

Haruki stared into his cup. “It’s practical. My parents wanted something stable. I… don’t mind it. I’m good with my hands.”

“I’ve noticed.” Her gaze flicked briefly to his fingers wrapped around the mug. “Miyu’s toys have never been safer.”

Silence settled, not awkward this time. Outside, the drizzle thickened into proper rain again.

Ayaka’s voice dropped. “Most guys my age either run the moment they see a kid, or they try too hard. You’re different. You just… fit.”

Haruki’s throat felt tight. “I like it here. With both of you.”

She reached across the counter and brushed a crumb from the corner of his mouth with her thumb. The touch lingered a second longer than necessary.

“Good,” she said softly. “Because that loyalty card is going to fill up fast if you keep coming around like this.”

He left that night with another stamp, the taste of cinnamon still on his tongue, and the distinct feeling that the reward she kept teasing might not be free coffee at all.
