Chapter 10: Golden Flowers
Riley made her way down the hall towards the Cafeteria, although having minor trouble doing so. It was a new day, and a new location she hadn't learned yet. Once she eventually made her way to the cafeteria, she grabbed some food and coffee, then went to take her seat. Mini took notice of Riley and began waving her down. Riley quickly rushed over, spilling a bit of coffee on her hands, "Ah, shit! Shit! Shit!" she shouted. She quickly put her food and drink on the table before rushing over to the napkins whilst Mini laughed wildly, "Move slowly, goof!" she called out. Riley soon returned to the table, sighing as she sat down, "Mornin' Mins..." she said, slightly groggy, "Morning Riley," Mini replied, smiling softly as she rested her head on her hand, "You been practicing sign like I asked?" Riley nodded, "Yep. Don't wanna undo our progress," She said, putting a fork full of egg in her mouth, "Good good," Mini said as she ate, still staring at Riley, smiling softly. Man does Riley wish she knew what Mini was thinking. That's kind of what still freaked her out about Mini. If she wanted to, she could find out what each person here was thinking, either by timeline manipulation or some other way. Even more so, unlike the Stickmins, Miranda could go back whenever she wanted for the most part. She didn't have to die. "Thinking about something?" Mini asked, "Huh? Oh uh, yeah, sorry," she started, "Was thinking about...well, I kinda realized just how easy it probably would be for ya to predict one of us here..." she said, stabbing her fork into more eggs, "Oh yeah?" Mini asked, her smile dropping to a blank stare, ready to switch to the new face, almost like a mask ready to be replaced by the next necessary emotion, "Yeah, with yer...uh...abilities and all that," Riley shrugged, "I mean, everyone but you," Mini stated. Riley thought for a moment, before realizing Mini was right, "Oh yeah, with the memories and such..." she thought aloud, "That's why I like you. Other than our past together and such...you're the only person not like me that isn't predictable." Riley looked up at Mini as she spoke, her eyes on her food, twisting her fork left to right and ripping off a piece of pancake, "When we first met in this...circumstance," she said, dancing around saying anything related to her timeline manipulation abilities, "I had seen everything repeat so many times that I thought of speech as dialog. Like, everyone was a video game character, repeating the same things they were coded to say," Mini continued, "And that...me, Harriet, and Henry were the only main characters. We were the players playing the game..." she sighed, "Even thinking about it makes my skin crawl...I felt like such an awful person when I finally broke out of that kind of thinking..." Mini stated, "But...when I met you...I was so freaked out, to be honest, terrified even. You deviated from your typical 'dialog.' You were different, you were new...you were..." she paused, staring Riley in the eyes as Riley took in the sparkle in her eyes that belonged to the young happy inventor Mini once was, "You were you," Mini finally finished. The two stared at each other for a moment, before quickly looking away from each other, "A-Anyway," Mini said, slightly flustered, "It just changed my whole perspective, y'know...?" she finished, looking down at her food. The two were silent through the rest of the meal. Mini soon stood, "I'm gonna head to the cockpit. Wanna come with?" she asked, smiling as she held out her hand, "Oh, sure," Riley stated, having just finished her food. As the two walked hand and hand, Riley kept her gaze away from Mini, quietly keeping her thoughts from exploding out of her, whilst Mini kept her eyes forward towards the ground, before speaking, "It's too quiet," she said, "Not in the 'something's wrong' kind of way, but it's like...tension filled quiet..." she added, "Oh, you wanna talk or something?" Riley asked, now turning to Mini as they walked, "Only if you want to," they were quiet for a little longer as awkward tension filled the air, before Mini finally spoke through the silence, "So, you have any family...?" she asked, "O-Oh, uh...yeah. Some I don't talk to though," Riley said, thinking for a moment, "My pa's been dead since I left last I checked, I don't talk with my ma, and...I have 4- er, 3 brothers and 6 sisters," Mini choked on her own spit, "Damn! That's a lot of kids!" Riley laughed a little, "It's worse when you're the oldest! I was made to take care of them most of the time before I up and left!" Mini smiled, "And I guess that's why you don't talk to your mom?" Riley shrugged, "More or less," Riley then cleared her throat, "What about yo- fuck, wait-" Riley stammered. Mini began laughing for a moment, "Rude!" she jokingly said, "I forgot, ok?!" Mini continued laughing, before collecting herself, "I do have an older brother out there somewhere," she explained, "Oh yeah?" Mini nodded, "Alex. He was 16 when I left home. He had a job that meant he was gone during most of the day, and I was left with our mom...she...she was a piece of work," Mini started, "Huh...guess that makes two of us, huh?" Riley said, chuckling softly, "That's actually how I ended up with my dads," Mini looked up to the ceiling, scraping through her memories momentarily, "She locked me out of the house...I had dropped her last bottle of beer when brought it to her..." Riley seemed slightly pissed off hearing this, but let it go for now, "Told me to not come back...that she didn't want me and all that...jokes on her!" Mini said, smiling, "It don't effect you are nothin'...?" Riley asked, slightly confused, "Why should it? I had loving parents, a stablish life, and caring uncles. The whole clan was my family, and yeah, most of them may of died, but I still have the current clan, right...?" she said, smiling, "And I have you!" Mini added, closing her eyes softly with love and joy in her voice. Riley's stomach was filled with butterflies as Mini looked at her with such care and happiness, "Y-Yeah..." she quietly stammered as they approached the cockpit. Mini quickly froze in her tracks, "What's wrong, Mins...?" Riley asked, before being reminded of Mini's claustrophobia, "Oh, right..." Riley felt her hand get squeezed softly. She slowly put her other hand on the hand squeezing her, "It's alright Miranda," she said, "The door ain't gonna get stuck like last time...and if it does, I'll pull it open myself, alright?" Mini nodded quietly, walking forward with Riley as she approached the door. It shut behind them, locking them in the enclosed room for a moment, but in that small moment memories of the airship crash flooded Mini's mind. How her father and Henry fought, how Right noticed her locked in the airlock but couldn't do anything to free her, and the airship getting closer and closer to the ground, before she was thrown against the wall. She squeezed her eyes shut, grabbing onto Riley's arm tightly in fear. It felt like eternity in the cramped space, before the next door finally opened and let them out. Mini breathed a sigh of relief as they entered the cockpit, "Y'alright, princess?" Riley asked before Mini finally let go of her arm, "I-I'm fine," she stammered out, almost as if she was out of breath, "Alright, good, good," Riley said. Soon, Mini left Riley's side, leaving her alone as Mini did her work. As Mini was distracted, Sven approached Riley, "Riley, right?" he asked, "Hm?" Riley turned to face the short man, "Yessir," she said, grabbing her top hat and tipping it back slightly as a greeting, "Sven," he said, holding his hand out. Riley grabbed the mans hand and shook it, "I'm thinkin' we've met before?" Riley asked, "In passing," Sven confirmed, "She's been much happier since meeting you," He noted, "I noticed that too," she said, nodding in agreement, "I'm glad, honestly...she hasn't really been happy since...vell, I'm sure she's told you," Riley nodded again, "It's not fair, to be honest..." They were quiet momentarily, before Sven spoke up once more, "Vell, I von't bother you much longer. I'm sure Burt's already threatened you," he said, taking his leave, causing Riley to choke, "H-How- What-" Sven smiled, "Ve're married, of course I know," was all he said before disappearing out the door. Soon, Mini came back to Riley, "Well, I've done what I need to here, let's go," Riley nodded, "Yes ma'm," she said, walking Mini back through the airlock. As they walked down the hall, Mini kept her arms behind her back, hands clasped and resting below her tailbone. She seemed content, "You know...there's one tradition the clan had that I haven't done yet," Mini started, "Yeah? That is?" Riley asked, "Picking out a right hand," she said, "Huh...?" Riley seemed slightly confused, "A right hand. A leader picks out someone they trust the most to be by their side through-out their leadership...a second-in-command, to say..." she said, looking down slightly, "Why haven't you done that then?" Riley asked, face blank as she kept her eye's forward, slightly closed in a somewhat lazy or tired manner, "Haven't found the right person. Sven, maybe, but he doesn't want the responsibilities of leader. It's why he stepped down on my 18th birthday," she said, "Huh...why you bringin' it up, then?" Riley asked, curiously, "Well, I couldn't find someone to be my second in command until now. I was wondering if you'd like to be my right hand lady?" Mini asked, smiling brightly at Riley, eyes shut once more as she waited patiently for Riley's answer. Riley froze momentarily, trying to reorganize her thoughts, "She's so damn adorable..." she thought to herself before shaking her head slightly, "You trust me...? After everything...?" she asked, confused. Miranda grabbed hold of Riley's hands, "You have risked your life for me, countless times, through this world and more. You've risked dying for me, you have died for me. There's no one in this world I trust more than you right now." Riley felt herself tongue tied at the moment as Miranda smiled warmly, her gray eyes sparkling like glitter as she waited oh so patiently and hopefully for Riley's answer, "Yes. I'd love to, Mins."
Harriet sat in the Helicopter, alone in the back. Coraline sat in the cockpit, slightly upset. Harriet stayed silent for a moment, before quietly speaking into her mic, "I'm sorry-" Coraline quickly interrupted her, "You stole a tank, robbed a flower store, then ate the flowers with Mathew and Bell when I found you to hide the evidence. You're lucky there was a hospital nearby..." Coraline said, a bit frustrated, "...sorry..." Harriet quietly said again. Coraline sighed, "If you want flowers, just buy them, Hari, you have my card...the military can't keep bailing you out of this kind of stuff anymore..." Coraline said, "I don't want you to end up in federal prison, though I'm sure you'd just break out..." Harriet kicked her right foot back and forth on the seat, nervously looking at the ground, "I-I...I didn't want you to see the purchase..." Coraline looked back momentarily, "What do you mean...?" she asked, confused, "I...um...I wanted...t-to...g...e..." she found herself too nervous to speak now, unable to get the words out. She huffed, and brought herself to the cockpit, flinging herself to the passenger seat, "W-Woah! Harriet! You can't be in the co-pilot! You don't have a license!" Coraline urgently said, "I wanted to get the flowers for you." she sighed, hands shaking from nervousness, "Aww, that's very sweet, but I don't really need flowers...let alone want stolen ones..." she said, adding the last bit somewhat silently, not wanting to hurt Harriet's feelings, "But why did want to get me flowers?" Coraline questioned, completely oblivious, "I wanted to ask...if you..." Harriet started, hands shaking as nervousness kept her eyes away from Coraline and on her hands. She took a deep breath, holding it momentarily before breathing out again, "If you wanted to go out, sometime..." Harriet finally got out, hands jittering as a weight pressed onto her chest, threatening to suffocate her to death, "Oh? You don't need flowers to ask me to go somewhere with you, silly! Where'd you want to go? We could go now if you-" Harriet started tapping her frantically to get her attention, "No, no! I mean go out Coraline...a date," Coraline felt her face flush, partly with embarrassment, "O-OH! Shoot!" she then laughed at herself, a nervous habit she had, "I-I- Um- Don't really know what to say!" She said, nervousness now filling her stomach with butterflies, "Sure. I'll go on a date with you, Hari!" Coraline said, smiling, before her smile dropped into a glare, "But no more stealing..." Harriet rubbed the back of her neck, "N-No promises..." Harriet meekly got out, "Now get out of my cockpit, shoo!" Coraline said, jokingly swatting her away, "Ok, ok, jeez!" Harriet signed before swinging herself to the back. She sighed with relief. She finally doesn't have that thought weighing on her in the back of her head...
Mini worked on her drones, phone resting between her shoulder and ear as she spoke to someone on the other end. Riley made her way to the room, mostly just wanting to chat, but stopped momentarily to let Mini finish her conversation, "J'ai juste besoin des pièces pour dimanche, est-ce possible?" She was quiet for a moment, "Bon, bon, très bien, on peut essayer la semaine prochaine...merci, Elise." She seemed a little annoyed, albeit tired for the most part, "Y'know French?" Riley asked, leaning in the doorway, "OH JESUS!" Mini said, fumbling her phone, then instantly slamming it down onto her hand painfully, trying to catch it, "Gah!" she shouted out, causing Riley to laugh, "I didn't think I was that quiet! Your hand alright?" she asked through chuckling, "Yeah, I'm fine, thank you..." she said quietly, "And yes, I know quite a few languages...we have distributors across seas, it's important someone on this airship can understand them," Riley nodded, intrigued, "And which one was that?" she asked, "Oh, that was Elise. She's our weapons dealer, but she's the only one who has contact with Louis, who makes the parts for my drones. They're married...she knows English, but Louis doesn't..." Mini sighed, "They were telling me they couldn't get me the parts I desperately need until next week...granted, we could just fly over to France, but I don't want the United Nations after us as well as the military by going over international waters..." Riley thought for a moment, before asking out of curiosity, "What languages do you know?" Mini shrugged, "Other than French and English? Well, Sven taught me Swedish, I learned Welsh from my papa...French from my biological grandfather on my fathers side...a lot of other stuff I learned from my dad..."She said, "Reginald, I mean, not my biological father," She added on for clarification, "He knew quite a few languages too." Riley seemed very interested, "Man...that's actually really cool. I tried to learn Spanish as a kid, but my teacher kinda sucked," Mini chuckled, "Yeah, understandable...schools don't seem to do well with teaching languages," she said, focus on the drone she was putting together, "I failed Spanish in High School cause I 'didn't know anything about Spanish,' despite being fluent..." she said, smiling. Riley walked over, before leaning on the table Mini was at, "You went to school?" she asked, "Oh yeah. Sven and Burt were always adamant on me getting an education. In fact, one of Sven's stipulations of handing off Toppat leadership to me was that I at least graduate high school." Riley looked up to the ceiling, "I didn't go to middle school, but I went to high school...enrolled myself," she said, "Really? Why didn't you go to middle school?" Mini asked, looking up from her work finally, "Ran away from home...was tired of my parents fighting and me having to raise my mother's children..." she said, "Ended up in the...involved with Collins shortly after I graduated...graduated early, actually..." she said, the memories of how she even got herself in that whole mess vaguely in her mind, "...that would make you under 18, wouldn't it? How'd you get into the C.C.C.?" Mini asked, somewhat quietly towards the end, "...I was walking back home...home being an abandoned building me, Ryan, and a couple others were staying in. There was a containment breech that got itself at the building...luckily Ryan wasn't there, cause everyone else either died during the breech, or was killed after. I would've followed suit if I didn't ask...well, beg to join..." Mini listened intently, though she could tell that this story pained Riley quiet a bit, "Some one the people were kids, y'know? ...The C-...They didn't have the amnestic they do now, so the only way to keep people from knowing about all that stuff was...well...killing the witnesses," Riley sighed shakily, "I told them I was 18...I had a track record at that point already, so they pulled me in as an assistant researcher...then a containment operative..." Mini let Riley pull herself together, "I'm sorry Riley, that sucks..." she quietly said, "I ain't there now anymore...but I still can't get those kids out of my mind..." Riley quietly said, looking at the ground, "...How'd you end up in the clan, Mins? I know you said your ma kicked you out, but you never told me how you actually got involved in the clan..." Riley asked, "...I stole from a former Toppat leader," she said, smiling with nostalgia in her mind, "Damn, really?" Riley asked, smiling with a slight look of shock in her eyes, "Oh yeah. I was...5 or 6 I think...he had a gold chain in his pocket...and I was very hungry. Thought if I pawned it off I would never have trouble with food again!" she said, chuckling softly, "But his right hand man caught me..." she explained, "I was scared, terrified even. I finally stole from the wrong people...but the leader stopped him...'She's just a kid.'" She closed her eyes for a moment, holding back tears, quietly collecting herself for a moment, "When he found out I was on my own, he started whispering to his right hand man, arguing probably...before he lent a hand to me, and asked if I'd like to come with them..." Riley crossed her arms, "Guessin' since you're here you didn't learn 'stranger danger' as a kid?" Miranda started laughing, before gently bopping Riley in the arm, "Shut up!" she said, "...I asked him what his name was, y'know, to be polite...'Reginald. What's yours?'" she paused for a moment, a tear dripping down her cheek, "...'Miranda'..." she quietly said. Riley put a hand on Mini's shoulder, attempting to comfort her, "...I miss them so much..." she said, voice cracking in the sadness, "I know, Mini, I know..." Riley said, now rubbing her back as Miranda cried.
Riley and Ryan sat in the records room, doing paper work and organizing files together. They sat quiet, writing, typing, and filing, before Ryan broke the silence, "Bit too quiet, innit?" he asked, "Yeah, just a tad," Riley replied, typing up an incident report, "Lot more work since you became the right hand lady, huh?" Ryan asked, smiling, "Eh, I ain't complainin', got something to do now," Ryan nodded, "True that, mate, true that..." he said, going back to his work. Riley sighed looking up at Ryan, "Ryan...you...uh...like, women...right?" Ryan looked up, slightly confused, "I've been with a lady or two, during our thieving days, yes," he answered, before putting his pencil down, "Why do you ask, love?" he asked, "....how do you...y'know, ask out a gal...?" she nervously asked, removing her hands from the keyboard, "Well, depends. Got a lass in mind?" He asked, smugly smiling, "I ain't telling ya who, just answer the damn question...also when the hell do you say 'Lass'?" Ryan put his hands up defensively, "Since now!" he huffed before putting his hands down, "...Typically, if I wanted to ask a woman out, I'd first figure out her love language," he explained, "Love language...?" Riley asked, confused, "How she shows love, or, well, more of how she'd like you to show your love...some people like complements, some like gifts, other's like hand holding and such. Sometime's they'd prefer heartfelt gestures. If I couldn't find out what they'd like, I'd do all of the above," he said, "Huh..." she said, sighing, "Thanks, Ryan..." she seemed a little defeated now, "For you, though, I know Ms. Copperbottom likes flowers, golden ones," Riley choked on her spit, "Damn it! You're the third person to tell me they know! Am I that damn obvious?!" Ryan started laughing, "No! You're not! However, you hang around and talk about Miranda a lot," he explained, "I genuinely thought you lot were very close friends until you asked me that question!" Riley sighed, "Damn it...blew my own cover," Riley said, jokingly, "Though, I never thought you liked women, considering, you know, your ex's..." he shrugged, "Yeah...I kinda realized it after that incident with...my last boyfriend..." Riley said, wincing slightly, "I tried to warn you David was no good for you, love," Riley sighed, "I know...I just...never felt like that before with someone, y'know...he made me feel..." Riley paused, not knowing the right words, "Special?" Ryan asked, "Y-Yeah..." Riley said, voice stuttering momentarily. Ryan smiled slightly, "And how does Mini make you feel?" Riley thought for a moment, "Happy...and like I'm gonna throw up..." she said, laughing at the end, "That's the difference between David and true love...David made you feel special, but that's just temporary happiness. However Miranda makes you actually feel happy. That's not temporary," he said, "You weren't happy with David, he just made you idolize him because he gave you attention. Mini actually cares about you," Riley sighed, "Thanks, man..." she seemed a little sad, "What's wrong, Riley?" he asked, "I dunno...I just...I don't think I can ask her out," Riley said, "Why not? You lot are friends, right?" Riley huffed, putting her hands to her face, "That's the problem!" she put both arms down, palms facing the sky, "She's adorable and funny and just...this wonderful person and I'm just...not worth it...I don't want to ask her out, and then she says no, and then we're never friends again...I can't risk ruining that..." Ryan rolled his eyes, "Oh what're you on about, Riley?" he asked, slightly annoyed. He turned his palms onto the table, leaning closer to Riley, "You miss every shot you don't take. If you don't ask the woman out, you've already lost," he said. Riley shook her head, "I'll think about it alright...? Let's just drop it..." Ryan sighed, "Alright, but you'll regret it if you don't just ask her, especially since you're her second in command. You'll only get hurt in the end," Riley raised her hand, waving him off as she began typing on the computer again, "Yeah, yeah..."
"Now, onto more pressing matters..." Mini sat in the board room, resting her head in her hand. This was her least favorite part of being the leader...the meetings. She knew they were necessary, but they bored the hell out of her, "What if we..." one of the executives started. Mini was zoned out, "What do you think, Miranda?" Mini heard as she snapped back to reality, "Huh? Oh, shoot, sorry, I was zoned out, what?" one of the members gave a nod of understanding, "What should we do about the military situation? Brent suggested maybe upping security?" they resaid, "Oh, sorry, uh," she said, rubbing her eyes, "That might be for the best...we don't have enough members, in my opinion, to do much else. We're getting there, but we aren't there just yet." The group nodded, going back to debate, "What about Smith?" she vaguely heard, "Oh, he's off to see his family," She felt herself starting to drift off as her eyes shut, before Riley shook her awake, "Mins? The meetings over, hun," Mini jolted awake, "huh?! What?! I shut my eyes for a few seconds!" Riley chuckled, "We ended early after you fell asleep!" she said, still laughing. Mini felt her face heat up in embarrassment, "O-Oh..." she said, "Maybe y'should go take a nap?" Mini sighed, "No, no...my sleep schedule's already skewed..." she said, sighing, "Understandable..." she said, looking off to the side, "Maybe we should just go get some food? Might help a bit since neither of us have had lunch yet." Mini nodded, standing groggily, "Yeah..." Riley led the way as Mini followed, holding her hand, "Other than falling asleep, how's your day been?" Mini shrugged, "It's a day," Mini said, "Yeah, I feel that..." She said, "So...I..." Riley started, "Was wondering...if you'd maybe...at, uh, some...point..." Riley found it hard to speak again, "Yeah?" Mini asked, turning to Riley, still tired. Riley's heart thumped in her chest, before calming as she sighed, "Never mind, probably not the best time to ask..." Riley said, "Yeah, probably...it'll most likely go through one ear and out the other right now..." Riley nodded, "Yeah..." Mini noticed Riley's defeat, "What? What's wrong?" Mini asked, "Nothing, nothing, 'm fine," she said, waving it off, "That's bullshit, but alright..." she said, tiredly, almost a similar tone to Burt, "Rude," Riley joking said, "Lying to me is rude!" Mini said, crossing her arms whilst making a fake pout, "To your best friend and boss, nonetheless," after getting food, Mini made her way to her workshop again. As she worked patiently, she found herself staring at potted flowers sitting by her window. She didn't know their name, just that the flowers reminded her of the flowers from her original home, ones that her brother desperately tried to keep alive after their father died. She sighed, putting her head in her hand as she stared at the flowers, somewhat orange towards the center, then fading to a bright yellow on the ends of each petal, rounded and neat. She took great care of monitoring the flowers, "Can't focus..." she mumbled to herself, missing the family she once had, "...Why won't you let me focus...?" she quietly murmured. She then put her face on the table, before looking back at her work, "...Damn it..." she said, standing from her chair. Not much use in being there when she had no attention. She eventually went to her room, laying on the bed. She would've attempted to sleep if her mind hadn't been elsewhere. She would've slept last night if it weren't for...she put a hand to her face, "Why does she have to be so damn hot?!" she said, frustration in her voice, "Damn it!" she added, slamming her fist on her bed. She turned her head to the side, a mirror facing her. In the rim of it sat pictures, each one wedged in. Some printed from her phone and some from a polaroid. The polaroid pictures had pictures of her and Harriet as kids, some when they were a little older, and one that was fairly recent, where she had taken a selfie making a taunting face as Harriet, dressed in military uniform, stared dazed in a flashing light, "Pfft..." Mini let out. The other's were printed pictures of her and Riley, some were selfie's they had taken together, one selfie with Riley trying to grab and Run with Mini as she screwed around whilst military had been hot on them, the same instance she had taken the more recent picture of her and Harriet. Others were pictures from missions or heists. She sighed, staring up at the ceiling as she sighed, then finally drifted to sleep.
