Chapter 7: The Leader and The Defector
Wake came to her with cruel claws, pulling Mini from sleep, though that wasn't to say sleep brought her peace. Ever since the airship crash, Mini had been plagued with nightmares of the day. She remembered being trapped, the panic, and the amount of death she saw that day. The child flipped from her side to her back, staring at the ceiling. After Sven had gathered everyone, they found an abandoned building that was still in good shape. Unless food or water was needed, everyone stayed in hiding in the building. People mourned the deaths and healed from their wounds; however, Mini still felt she was in place in time, as if she was disconnected. She noticed that, shortly after the crash, no matter how hard she tried to go back to a time when her parents were alive, something wouldn't let her. Not something within her subconscious or mind, no, something quite literally stopped her from resetting...she sighed; the world seemed so cruel to her this time around. She lay on her bed, rotting until a knock came, "Hey, uh, Mini?" she heard Burt, "I know how nice it is to sleep all day, but you should probably eat something before Sven drags you out of bed..." Mini sighed, "Give me a minute..." she said, before begrudgingly pulling herself out of the warm comfort of the blanket on her. She stretched and yawned, nightgown swinging to her scared ankles, one of which casted, and went to get dressed. She wore a simple outfit, a pastel purple, puffy, white dotted blouse, and a black skirt with overalls attached. She slipped on a sock and black shoe on her non-injured foot, tied on the velcro on her shoe, and left the deafening place, a crutch carrying the weight of her bum leg. She walked down the gloomy hall, the sound of rain hitting every window she passed. It had been storming on and off throughout the week. As she passed and entered the main room, she heard an old box TV sound from the middle back of the room, "Several hundred, perhaps even thousands of bodies were discovered in the ruined Toppat base..." Looks like the airship crash was found, "...Including the Toppat leader. 11 bodies have yet to be found, and it is unknown if any of them are alive," it then showed pictures of each member that resided here with ages, along with Right, who she had little hope of him being alive. The only one missing was her, since she didn't really have many pictures of herself. It simply said 'no image found' and her name and age, 'Miranda Annastasia Copperbottom, age 7'. she soon found the remote and shut the TV off. Someone began to speak, but fell silent once they saw it was her, her cold, sorrowful eyes glaring into them. She then left, heading to a small, shabby room that they set up as a kitchen. Sven usually cooked here, since the others were fairly incompetent, "Morning, Miranda," he said, somewhat quietly, "How are you feeling?" Mini shrugged, walking over to him, "I'll take that as doing somevhat ok," he said, softly, "...Sven?" she called out in a murmur, "Yes?" he replied, more focused on cooking than the child, "What happens now...?" she asked, "Vhat do you mean?" he asked, looking at her, slightly confused, "I mean...is this just...it? Is the Toppat clan finished?" Sven sighed, "Miranda, you and I both know that vhile I very much could, I'm not the best pick for a leader...hell, I don't vant to be a leader. On top of that, the others vant to go home and see their families," Mini huffed, "I could be a leader!" she said stubbornly, "I don't doubt you could, you're very smart, but you are a child, Mini..." he said, "...I want to go home..." she mumbled. Sven sighed, patting her shoulder, "I'll think about keeping the clan together, alright...?" Mini soon left, going back to her room. She flopped onto her bed, then sat up, frustrated and angry. Why did the crash have to happen? Harriet's idea to have Henry in the clan was so so stupid! This wouldn't have happened if Harriet....Harriet. Mini felt rage thinking of her old friend. Harriet thought this would be sooo fun...but now her parents are dead. She wasn't thinking, only seeing red as she subconsciously raised her hand, tightening it into a fist, before smashing it into a wall, making a nice dent, and a sickening crack from her bones. She looked at her hand, ignoring the pain that surged through it. Attempting to move a finger, she stopped herself as the pain worsened. Soon, her door swung open, Burt standing in the doorway, "I heard a thud, are you-" Mini looked over, still having her hand raised, tears staining her cheeks. It seemed her mind was starting to finally process everything as she clenched her other hand and let out a grief-filled scream. Burt silently stood there as she let out her emotion, only walking over when she broke down into sobs, picking her up, and leaving the room with her, "Let's get your hand looked at, ok...?" he quietly said as Mini stayed silent, "...It's...it's going to get..." he sighed, "You know what, no, I'm not going to tell you everything's going to get better...it's not..." he said, "I'm sorry, Mini...I'm so sorry..."
Sven sat quietly in the area he had set up to act as a longue, cup of tea in hand . Sitting in the silence, he noticed how different it was from before. On the airship, there was always some sort of noise breaking the silence. Now, however, the silence was deafening. He found it odd, how, before all this, he wanted quiet to focus...now? He wished someone would fuck up, and Right would come through a door, pissed off. He wished Reginald were here to lead them in these trying times, to get everyone the hell out of here. He sighed, shaking his head. What's done is done now, and nothing's gonna change. He should be moving on, but...it was fairly hard after everything...he stood, making his way to where he had his room set up. As he passed by Miranda's room, he heard noises, halting to a stop. He slowly opened the door, seeing Mini at a desk, working on a drone, "...What...?" she croaked out, looking over to him with a pair of welding goggles on her eyes, "It's 2 am, Miranda..." he whispered, "I know," she said, continuing her work. Sven sighed, entering the room, "I know you're avoiding sleep because of the nightmares...but they'll only worsen if you stay avake..." he said. She only continued working to his dismay, "Besides, the walls are thin here...You vake the others..." Mini nodded, putting her tools down and taking her goggles off, before retreating to her bed, "Good night...try to sleep vell," Mini nodded.
Her shoes clicked through the hall, the old building having patches of plaster and wood filling in decaying holes in the walls. The preteen soon stopped, turning on her heel in a quick fashion, and finding her way to the lounge. The place seemed more lively than it did 4 years ago. Sven eventually decided to keep the clan running, though Mini practically ran it, giving commands and advice as Sven went along. It was for the best this way, considering she knew the ins and outs of how everything was run. She made her way to the dining area, which was upgraded from the old dingy tables that had originally been placed in the rooms to nicer, cleaner metal tables. Quite a few of the original members had 'retired' and gone home to their families, leaving her, Burt, and Sven as the only remaining members...that and Hat Girl, but she doesn't do much. Despite the leaving Toppats, they were slowly growing, one member at a time. She grabbed some coffee, then sat, neglecting to grab anything to eat. However, two pieces of buttered toast were placed in front of her by Sven, glaring slightly, "You're not leaving until you eat some real food, all you had was chips for dinner last night," he said, almost like a concerned mother. Mini simply nodded. She hasn't really changed much since the attack. Consistently quiet and expressionless. She doesn't really know how to handle herself anymore. She ate the toast Sven gave her, leaving with her coffee to work on her drones. Doing the coding was much easier this time around. She had it memorized after redoing it between timelines so many times. It was mostly mass-producing the drones at this point. It brought her some peace, not thinking about life and everything...however, despite doing this activity today, she couldn't stop her thoughts, each one popping up and disappearing like passing cars, until eventually staying in her mind, like a pile up stopping each car in it's tracks, keeping them and their passengers in place. "Neither of us are dying on you," is what Right said when she was a child, "We're not gonna leave you, either." She face planted onto the table, sighing, "Hard to promise you'll stay alive with your line of work, papa..." she mumbled, "...Great job on keeping your promise..." she said, chuckling softly to herself despite tears dripping onto the table. She sighed, collecting herself as she wiped her tears, then continued her work, "You couldn't keep your promise..." she mumbled again, this time the humor in her voice replaced by sorrow, pain, and a slight tinge of anger. Burt happened to be passing by, "You alright?" he asked, "Yeah...I think...just thinking...I'm fine," she said as Burt sat beside her, "Can I watch?" he gently asked, "Are you trying to avoid work?" she asked, hypothetically, already knowing the answer, "...Maybe...?" Mini rolled her eyes, "Sure, but if Sven finds you, I'm not the reason why you're slacking..." she said, coldness in her voice, but intention filled with humor, "Yeah, as if he's the one running the clan at this point," he chuckled, watching Mini work, "I'm sure they'd be proud of you..." he quietly said, "...I know, they're my parents...I'm sure they would've been...I just wish they were here to tell me that..." Burt was quiet for a moment, "Sven and I are proud of you," he said, attempting to comfort, "Yeah, but you two are more like my uncles, of course you're proud," Burt shrugged, "I've always thought of Sven as more of your aunt. He's too sassy and petty to be an uncle," Mini shook her head, "True." Soon a voice spoke up, "Burt, stop talking shit and get back to vork," Sven taunted as he passed. Burt raised his hands, "Alright, alright, jeez," he said, standing, "Guess my unauthorized break is over...don't overwork yourself," he said as he left, "Sure I don't need to tell you the same," Mini said, jokingly. Soon, she was alone again with her thoughts. "Hi tired-" Reginald started, "Don't you dare!" Mini sighed as the laughter of the past echoed in her ears, "Probably the best worst idea we made," Right said, "kid was trouble from the start," then another voice spoke, "You aren't any better, old man!" Mini shook her head, attempting to refocus, tools wizzing faster and faster as frustration festered inside her, "What's your name?" He smiled again, "Reginald. What's yours?" she gave a smile, "Miranda." She slammed her drill on table, left hand slamming down as well as she promptly stood. Her breath was labored, tension rising in her chest as she fought with herself not to get angry at herself...they wouldn't want to see her like this. She soon swallowed her anger as she left, unable to focus on her work. Besides, she had a heist to direct a group through, she needed to get ready. She refused to let what her fathers built die in vain.
"What do you mean you set the water on fire?!" a Toppat member said, "I mean I set it on fire!" another said, "How the hell do you do that?!" the first said, starting to panic, "I don't know, but we better put it out before the boss-" soon, the door to the kitchen opened with a soft thud as it hit the wall, "gets...here..." the second Toppat finished, staring at 18-year-old Miranda. She stood quietly, scanning the room, eyes half closed and bags under her eyes. She had a scar lying across her left cheek from the airship crash. Many more covered her arms and legs. She wore a nice, purple, meticulously pressed suit vest, sitting on top of a white button-up, sleeves rolled up just above her elbows. She wore black dress pants covering her legs until just below the knees, where she had the pants rolled up as well, and two top hats on her head, one once belonging to Reginald, and one once belonging to Right. The flower that had sat on her original top hat now sat on her hair, wilted and browned. She soon looked at the two panicking Toppats, now staring at her nervously, "...Out. Now." she sternly said, the two Toppats quickly took on a frightened expression, before scurrying off. She then took a pot lid and smothered a fire in a stockpot. She then looked at the other members, who were still staring at her, "...Well? Get back to work...at this pace, y'all will have lunch ready before your breaks..." she said, then taking her leave. As soon as she came of age, Sven stepped down as leader, and she took his place. It wasn't a massive change, however, as it was a slow transition to her leadership–she already pretty much ran the place. She had the place rearranged and patched up as her first act as leader, making the building much more suitable as a base of operations. She began down a hall, meeting up with Sven, "Was wondering if you were up," he said. Mini didn't respond, just nodding, "...Vant to go on a heist for me? Been out and about the entire day," Mini nodded, "I need to get out, to be honest," Mini quietly stated, "I thought you might."
Mini slowly dropped into a room, a tether holding her weight until her feet touched the ground. She unstrapped herself from the tether. Looking around the room. It was the same museum she and Riley first robbed together, she remembered the layout perfectly. She pulled out a small bottle of perfume, vanilla honey flavored, and spritzed it in the air, revealing red light bouncing off each particle. One wrong move and she'd set the alarms off then be completely locked in, making it much harder to get out. She sprayed more perfume to make the lasers more visible, then began carefully maneuvering over, through, and under each beam of light. Each movement as graceful as a swan, and as careful as a ballerina. It helped that she was flexible, allowing her to bend in ways the average person would find difficult. She soon made her way to her goal, the prized ruby the clan had been wanting to steal to make themselves a name again. As she placed her gloved hand on it, another landed next to it, causing Mini to spin her head quickly, drawing her gun. The unknown hand was raised above its owner. Mini immediately recognized the red head, causing her aim to falter before becoming steady once more, "Mini, focus on me," Mini's eyes locked on her, hyperventilating, "Calm down, breath...in...out..." Mini disregarded the memory...Riley won't remember her anymore, "Who are you...?" she quietly muttered, "...None of your business..." Riley stated, a bit stand-offish like before...however, a look of recognition came upon her face, "Have...we met before?" she asked, "What?" Mini responded, confused. This...this was different, Riley was using different dialog...it should at least be similar, right? "I swear I've seen you before..." she then noticed the womans top hats, "You're one of them Toppats, huh? Thought they all died!" she said, a cocky smirk on her face. Mini remained silent. Right, she was the Toppat leader now...and the clan's not as 'famous' as it used to be, but it was still somewhat known. Of course Riley would recognize her... "Not much of a talker, huh...which one of 'em are you, huh? Guessing all those people whose bodies weren't found are alive as well?" Minin shook her head, "No...not all of them. The rest aren't Toppats anymore," Riley's cockiness left her momentarily, "I'm sorry to hear that..." then realization hit her, "Hang on a minute...you're the kid, aren't you? Miranda Copperbottom?" Mini remained silent once more, but put her weapon away, pulling out a gadget, attaching it to the ruby and shrinking its size, catching it in her palm and pocketing it, "If you're going to continue to patronize me, then perhaps I should take my leave," Riley scoffed, "What, too good for a chat with a lowly thief, princess?" She taunted, "I am a 'lowly thief' myself," she said. Despite her confidence, Riley's nervousness spiked as her target took her leave. She had to do something, or it was her head. Riley quickly bolted, shooting past Mini and knocking her over. Mini thudded onto her hip, bruising it. She patted her pockets, then noticed the ruby was gone, "That son of a..." she stood up and bolted after her. She quickly caught up and tackled her, fighting the ruby from her hands, the two rolling back and forth, before triggering a laser, setting the place into lockdown. They both stopped as the sirens went off, "...fuuuuuuuck..." Riley let out. Mini stood up, yanking the ruby from Riley, before holding a hand to her, "You've got some balls..." she said. Riley took the woman's hand, "More like I'm fighting to survive..." she muttered, "Is that so?" Mini said, making her way to a vent at slow pace, as if the police weren't impending, "...The clan has plenty of open spaces, if you'd like to stay for awhile...no need to worry about the simple things..." Riley scoffed, "Yeah, no thanks, princess. As soon as we find a way out, I'm taking that ruby and leaving..." Mini shrugged, "Suit yourself. The ruby is mine, though," Mini stated, climbing into the vent and army-crawling her way out. She knew Riley would find her again, one way or another. If the C.C.C. knew she'd be here, they likely already have someone on the inside.
1:59 AM. Mini lay in her bed, mind still running as she tried to sleep. It was like this every night. She'd fall asleep at varying times. She soon flopped to her back, staring at the ceiling, the sound of a clock ticking from her wall ringing in her ears. 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3. The clock rhythmically ticked. 3. 2. 1. Just as 2 AM hit, sirens sounded throughout the building. Mini shot up. Was there a military attack?! Were they found?! Mini quickly flung herself out of bed, nightgown swaying quickly from side to side as she grabbed her top hats and her pistol from her nightstand and ran out into the hall. Few were light enough sleepers to be woken by the alarm. The few that were awake began scanning the base as Mini went to the treasury. As she opened the door, that's when she saw three familiar faces, "Oh, it's you, from the museum heist," Mini said, "Who are your friends?" Riley didn't say anything. Mini rolled her eyes, "Alright then, let's try something different," she said as two more clan members joined her. Mini walked to Riley, pulling a knife to the woman's neck and pulling her close, "Tell me, what the hell are you doing here in my clan?" Riley swallowed, realizing Mini wasn't just the kid from the airship crash all those years ago...she was the current Toppat Leader. Nervousness flashed on Riley's face momentarily, before switching to a confident smirk, "What's it to you, princess?" she taunted, "I will slice your pretty little throat open here and now..." Riley chuckled, "Are you flirting?" she taunted again, "So what if I am?" Mini said, death glare unyielding, yet still flustering and choking Riley up, as she didn't expect that kind of response from Mini. Soon, Ryan interrupted, "Um, I apologize for interrupting, but what is happening right now?" Mini soon let Riley go, making the redhead fall to the ground, holding her throat and choking, "What...just happened...?" one of the Toppat members said before getting a command from the leader, "Lock them up, kindly..." Mini said, "H-Hey!" Riley shouted out before getting grabbed, "I told you this was a stupid idea, Riley!" Mars shouted, "You damn snake..." Riley muttered under her breath before noticing a quick death glare from Mars. She swallowed her fear, remained silent for the rest of the trip to the cells.
Riley sat in the cell, whistling into the silence as a Toppat approached, "Ms. Copperbottom wants to see you," she said, opening the door and leading Riley to Mini's workshop. As Riley entered, she was surrounded by walls of killing machines. Each bit of wall held hundreds of shut off drones, with some empty spaces for more drones, "Oh, you, hello," Mini said, pulling off her welding goggles, "I don't think I've ever gotten your name," she said, "...Riley..." Riley said, nervousness on her tongue, "I see..." Mini then stood, approaching, "Look. My cells aren't built to hold people long term...I'd like to make an offer to you. In return you'll earn your freedom," she said, the lack of smile on her face raising Riley's discomfort, "This woman is fucking weird," Riley thought to herself, "I...I see...and...what exactly is this offer...?" Riley asked, "Well, there's a specific diamond I've had my eye on for quite some time, I'd like to add to the clan's collection–the Tunisian Diamond. Steal that for me, and you can go off scott-free!" Mini proposed, "...And what's stopping us from just ditching...?" Riley asked, her stand-offishness returning. Mini soon produced a picture from her pocket, handing it to Riley. Her eyes went wide, "H-How..." she stammered, looking at the inside of her base from the picture, "How did you find...?" Riley tried to finish, but being held back by shock and fear, "I have my ways, Ms...?" Mini said, cutting herself off, "...Renalds..." Mini nodded, "So, do we have a deal, Ms.Renalds?" Mini asked, holding her hand out, a slight frown taking the place where Riley felt there should be a cocky smirk, "...You have yourself a deal, Ms.Copperbottom..." she said, shaking the woman'sp hand firmly.
It's been a month since the diamond heist. Riley was actually unsuccessful in stealing the diamond; some girl named Harriet stole it first. Although Mini still held her word, despite Riley not holding her's. 'At least you tried' is what the leader said. Everything was going according to plan. Riley had enough trust from Mini to be a part of the Toppat Clan. If she played her cards right, she'd be able to contain her target and go home. She yawned, working on paperwork steadily. Eventually, Mini joined her. Riley didn't notice, just continuously working. Mini watched her, quietly, like a hunter watching it's prey, before bending over by Riley's ear and speaking, "Must be working hard if you don't notice me here," Riley jolted, falling out of her chair and quickly wiping out a gun, pointing it at Mini, "...sloppy, but quick response..." she quietly noted, standing up straight=, "Get a bell, woman!" Riley defiantly said as she put her gun back in its holster, standing up and dusting herself off, "Will do," Mini said. Riley couldn't tell if she was joking or not. Didn't help that she didn't smile. Even though it's been only a week since she officially joined the clan, even she had grown fearful of Mini like the other clan members, even more so since Mini seemed to take a liking to her. The C.C.C. seemed to be right about her. She was sadistic and dangerous in her eyes, "What are you working on?" Mini asked, looking at the paperwork, "Uh, documentation of the latest heists," Riley nervously said. Mini slightly missed the cocky and sickly sweet voice Riley had on her first run through everything, "Huh..." she said, "Used to be so cocky, what happened to you?" Mini said. Had Mini met Riley before in another timeline? Riley knew that she and Mini had possibly met, especially with the severe deja vu she got from Mini, but...it felt odd trying not to show that she knew what Mini was. Did Mini know about who she was? Riley swallowed her anxiety down, "Hard to be when you scare the shit out of everyone, princess," Riley said, smirking, "Hm, I guess your right," Mini responded, "...Be more of yourself, Renalds. I'm not going to punish you for it," she said, before taking her leave, "Stay safe," Riley sighed in relief, "Yup," Riley said. She soon stood, before making her way to the cafeteria to get a snack and a break. She simply grabbed an apple, before taking a seat at a table, pulling a sketchbook from a purse she had on her, and began sketching. As she did, a Latina woman who would chat with her from time to time sat with her, "Ms. Renalds, I didn't think I'd see you at this time. Guessing you have paperwork tonight?" She had an accent, not super thick, but enough that it didn't match up with the regional accent. Riley found it pretty, to be honest. Reminded her of a friend she had as a child, "Unfortunately," She said, raising her hand slightly as a greeting, "How are ya, Carmen?" Riley asked, smiling softly, "Tired, but otherwise just fine...Seems Ms. Copperbottom has taken a liking to you," Carmen said, smiling, "I noticed that too...kinda scary t'be honest," Riley stated, sighing, "Well I think it's great she found someone to talk to," Carmen started, smiling, "Poor thing hasn't been the same since the airship crash," Carmen put her elbow on the table, laying her hand down with it, "Oh really?" Riley said, resting her head in her hand, not really paying attention to the woman as she munched on her apple, "Well, of course, wouldn't you be hit hard if you lost your parents like that?" Riley shrugged, "Not really...I don't really- wait...wait, wait, wait, what?" Riley choked, quickly collecting herself and looking at Carmen wide-eyed, "You didn't know...?" Carmen asked, slightly confused, "I thought Burt and Sven were her parents or somethin'!" Riley said, "Well, legally they're her guardians, but her parents were actually the previous leader and his Right Hand Man," Riley was quiet for a moment. It all made a lot of since now, why Mini was so quiet and to herself, "Damn...I genuinely had no idea...poor kid. That crash hit the news when I was 10. She hada been 7, huh?" Carmen nodded, "Yup. Don't worry about not knowing. A lot of newer Toppat members have the same assumption. Doesn't help that Burt and Sven are together..." Soon, a voice called out, "Carmen? Riley?" Riley quickly looked over, "Oh- Uh- M- Fuck-" Riley said in a panic, seeing Mini, "Got another who though Burt and Sven were your parents, Ms. Copperbottom," Carmen stated. Mini nodded, "Oh really?" she said with a tired voice, before turning to Riley, "I thought you were working?" Mini asked, "I took a break," Riley said, collecting herself, "Oh. Breaks are important. Make sure to take plenty," she said, before heading to the coffee maker and setting it up for tomorrow, cleaning it out and refilling it's grounds before leaving, "Take care, you two," she said, disappearing behind the door. Riley let out a sigh of relief, "She seemed pissed off..." Riley said, sweating slightly, "Actually, she was in good humor," Carmen said, "I- Huh? How the hell ya know that? She doesn't make any expressions...hell, she's monotone all the time...like her da- like Burt," Carmen shook her head, "Trust me, you'll know when she's angry. She usually only says 'oh really' when she finds something funny. She thought it was funny you were clueless," Riley sighed, "Damn, need to relearn some stuff about her now, huh..." Carmen chuckled, "That's for sure...perhaps you should hit the hay, it's late," Riley nodded, "Yeah, you're right..." Riley stood and took her leave, "Hasta mañana, Riley," Riley nodded, "Yeah, uh, asta manana or whatever..." Riley said, not really knowing Spanish. She went to her room, locking the door behind her as she did, sighing, and sitting on her bed. A LOT about Mini made a lot more since now...she wasn't sadistic, just...hurt, "Why the hell do I feel like I met you, Mins...?" she said to herself, "And why do I feel so...sad seeing you this way...?" she shook her head. Soon, there was a knock on her door, "Yeah?" she called out, "Hey, Riley, you good?" it was Mars. Riley opened the door, "Yeah, I'm good, the mission was just...beat me pretty good," she said, "Any word from Collins?" she asked, a code name they gave the C.C.C., "Yeah. She's starting to trust me, so we have that," Mars noticed something, "You don't seem like you wanna complete the mission," Riley sighed, "I do, I'm just..." she sighed, feeling like she's said this before, but she didn't know where, "...I'm gonna sleep," Mars nodded, "Right...remember what we're here for," then Mars left, and Riley shut the door. She laid on her bed and fell asleep.
