Chapter 20 - Together
The next morning, Sam finally got up as Rachel was sleeping before breakfast. He went down to the kitchen to see Dick sitting on the couch in the lounge.
Sam: Dick?
Dick: Oh, morning, Sam. Can't sleep?
Sam: Just a lot on my mind.
He sat down next to him.
Dick: Yeah. How are things with you and Rae?
Sam: It's complex, I guess. She feels like a burden is on her shoulders only. I want to help her, but she won't let me in.
Dick: She's like that, I know. But after what happened to you, she has every reason to care for you.
Sam: So what can I do?
Dick: The best you can. She'll be okay. You have to trust her.
Sam nods before shutting his eyes for a little bit. When he woke up, Dick was gone. He probably went back to his room. Sam was tired of this Black Mask getting away with his schemes all the time. He wanted to take him down, but how could he do it?
In the meantime, he went up to the roof to watch the sunrise. It was no different from previous times, but he knew this time, there was no comfort in it. Dark days could be on the way. He must be ready. The same goes for the rest of the Titans.
Rachel: I knew you'd be hiding up here.
Sam: Wasn't trying to hide.
She sat down next to him and held his hand tightly.
Sam: I know what's been going on, Rae. I'm not a telapath, but I can tell when something is wrong.
Rachel: I told you, I can handle this. The last thing I want is this reaching you.
Sam: You don't have to worry about me.
Rachel: I do. I do.
They had a moment of silence. It is a problematic situation in a difficult time.
Sam: If he does show up, we can face it together—you, me, and everyone else. You don't have to face it all by yourself. I can promise you that.
Rachel: Okay.
Sam: Um. We should probably head for breakfast.
Rachel: Yeah, sure.
They headed down for breakfast, silently. While they were all eating, Dick had some news.
Dick: After a brief talk, we believe we have a lead on where Black Mask could be. Roughly, every one of those generators was stationed underground in warehouses. We think he could be holding up in a similar spot; we just haven't found it yet. So today, Cyborg will analyze the foundations of every building in Jump City that dates back to the 1950s, as that was the age of all the others. We'll sweep out all of them once we determine all their locations. We'll have news at lunchtime.
In the meantime, Sam went to the lounge to chill until Jamie greeted him.
Sam: Jamie?
Jamie: Hey, Sam. I was thinking about that rematch.
Sam: Oh, I'm down.
Garfield: Me too!
Jamie: Gar? You want to play with us?
Garfield: Can I?
Sam: I'm okay with that. Jamie?
Jamie: No, yeah, that's cool. I just thought, you know, you two-
Garfield: We're cool now.
Sam: Yeah, we worked things out. It's okay.
Jamie: Alright, let's see what you got!
They started playing Mortal Kombat again, taking turns versus each other. Sam won against Jamie again, as he did to Garfield, but Sam bested Garfield in a fair one-on-one. Again.
Garfield: Damn!
Sam: MK Champ here!
Jamie: Good round!
Sam: Yeah. That was cool.
Garfield: I'm gonna need to step up my game.
Jamie: You guys wanna get some food now?
Sam: Nah, I'm good. I need to take care of some things anyway. I'll see you at noon!
He walked off, heading back to his room to sharpen his Sword. He still remembers the day he got it. It was an unexpected, yet coincidental event that changed his whole life. There are many days when he feels happy to be what he is, but there are a few when he asks himself, "Am I enough to handle this?"
At noon, Dick informed everyone of the underground areas Cyborg discovered. They split off into smaller teams. Demi, Beetle, and Robin are sent to a hotel building, currently in use, with many people residing in it.
Demi: This is the place?
Robin: Yes. We'll need to find a way underground.
Beetle: Alright. We should find a quiet way in, right?
Robin: You finally try it my way?
Demi: Save it for later, boys. We have a warlord to catch.
They found a back door that led into a storage closet. As sneaky as possible, they managed to get down to the basement area, as that is where they would find a structural weak point, like Cyborg mentioned.
Demi: I can feel cold air.
Robin: It's coming from that wall.
Beetle yet again blasted it open, revealing a tunnel heading downward on an angle. Demi walked through first.
Demi: It's kinda creepy down here.
Robin: Demi, wait!
Just then, the tunnel was closed off by a door, and the floor below Demi collapsed.
Demi: Hell no!
He impaled his Sword into the wall to slow his fall. It stopped perfectly above a metal walkway. He dropped down and followed it down the hall.
Demi: Robin? Beetle? Anyone?
His comms weren't functioning. The signal down here must be feeble. He kept creeping down the walkway until he reached a big metal door. He pried it open with his Sword as it revealed a whole operation going on. He hid behind a container before anyone saw him.
Demi: What the hell?
There were more of those weapons and tanks with that weird energy. They were being manufactured right under the Titans' noses. And now Demi, all by himself, had to stop it, but how?
